First of all, let understand what is Paraben:

Let's not go in-depth for a better and clear understanding.

Paraben is a synthetic chemical substance that is widely used in pharmaceutical products and cosmetics. Parabens are old stuffs and being in use since the 1950s 

Almost all of the parabens are synthetically produced for commercial purposes.


Fact: Parabens are derived from PHBA which is acid and this acid is naturally produced in our body for break down of amino acids.

What is Sulfate:

Sulfate (a type of salt) is a chemical substance and derived from sulphuric acid, which can be found in several places such as seawater, gypsum, etc.

Keep in mind that sulfate and sulfite are two different things. Sulfite is used in food preservation but not sulfate.

Most people may think that acid itself is very harmful for humans, but the fact is that we are consuming a lot of acids which are available in lemon, orange, apple, etc. It is not bad. Note the fact that we can consume weak acid but not the strong acid

  • Shampoo

  • Soap

Why do Paraben and Sulfate are added to skin care products?

These substances are added to skin care products such as shampoo, soap, etc.

1. Why Paraben is added?

Parabens are added in cosmetics, skincare products because they are highly effective in slow down the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeast which can spoil the product. 

2. Why Sulfate is added?

Sulfate is added in shampoo, soap, etc to create better lather. This helps in increase the cleansing effect.

Sulfate helps in removing excess oil, though it may remove too much oil from your skin, making it dry.

Do Phosphate and Sulfate cause cancer?

No

Till now, there is no evidence for Sulfate to cause cancer. It is just a rumor which is widely being circulated through social media.

But the problem doesn't end here. Products having Parabens may or may not cause cancer.

In 2004, a study shows that paraben can cause breast cancer and a lot of controversies started to circulate.

But till now, there is no evidence that parabens can cause cancer. Parabens are being widely used since the 1950s.
