Sony has recently confirmed that PS5 is going to support almost 99% of the total PS4 games. Making it a nearly perfect backward compatible console.
The first information related to backward compatibility of PS5 was informed by Sony in March of 2020. Though several controversies were going on whether the next-generation PS5 will support all the games of PS4 or just a few games.
So this time Sony has revealed a lot of information about PS5 rather than just about its backward compatibility. Let's talk about all the games on PS4 which is not going to be played on PS5.
PS4 Games Which Are Incompatible With PS5
- DWVR
- Hitman Go
- Afro Samurai 2
- TT Isle Of Man
- Just Deal With It!
- Shadow Complex Remastered
- We Sing
- Joe's Diner
- Robinson: The Journey
- Shadwen
Out of these games, only a few games are even reviewed good such as Afro Samurai 2 and Hitman Go.
Though all of these incompatible games are not popular enough and I don't think this will be really a negative statement about PS5 because almost none of these games got good recognition and merely few percentage of total PS4 players have any game out of this list. All the good PS4 games like GTA 5, Watch Dogs 2, RDR 2, TLOU 2 will be supported on PS5.
Some popular PS4 titles which can run on PS5:
- GTA 5
- Watch Dogs series
- Assassins Creed series
- The Last Of Us - both parts
- Battlefield 1
- Call Of Duty Modern Warefare (2019)
- Hitman 3
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Uncharted series
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Far Cry 6
- Dirt 5
- Assassins Creed Valhalla
All the supported PS4 titles can run physically (disc) as well as digitally (PS store).
Not only it can support backward compatibility, PS5 can also support Dualshock 4, but only for PS4 games. Backward compatibility is one of the major features of PS5 because this feature wasn't there at all in PS4, as well as PS3 didn't has backward compatibility feature to its full extent.
A few months ago, Sony was claiming that only the top 100 titles of PS4 were going to be compatible on PS5. But now Sony completely changed its statement by claiming that more than 4000 titles will support backward compatibility on PS5. Never thought that Sony would invest so much in upgrading its backward feature. However, this is really good for Sony, because Sony is a company that has always compromised features over profit.
What else with backward compatibility of more than 4000 titles?
Apart from backward compatibility as well as PS5's specs (which I am not going to talk about), even the PS4 controller is supported on PS5, but here is an exception that PS4 controller can only be used for playing PS4 titles on PS5. As well as PSVR will be supported.
There are still some negative points about PS5 regarding backward compatibility feature.
Demerits of PS5 backward compatibility:
- Sony has already said that some users might face errors while playing the PS4 title in PS5 and the error is still unknown.
- Sony also told that PS5 may show unexpected behavior during playing PS4 titles in it.
- The share menu of PS4 games will be replaced with PS5's own create menu where one can record the gameplay as well as take screenshots while gameplay. Though this isn't necessarily a demerit but can be described as a new feature.
- PS Move controller for PS4 will only work for PS4 titles in PS5 and you cannot play with it for PS5 titles. But wait, more than 4000 PS4 titles are compatible on PS5, right?
- No information about backward compatibility of PS Now.
Why no backward compatibility of older generation PS with PS5?
The difference between PS5 and old gen PS (not PS4) is massive. The architectural setups are quite different. PS5 is made to run newer games with high performance. I believe Sony could actually could do something for those old titles of PS3, 2, and 1. Even the digital edition of PS5 could at least be able to play old gen titles without putting the discs. On the other hand, Sony doesn't want to put too much work and money into setting up backward compatibility in those PS.
Moreover, why PS5 should run old titles if it's a new console?
PS5 is made with newer technology and no one would want to put effort to make this console suitable to run ps3, 2, or 1 titles. It is like playing Mario on i9 9th gen paired with Rtx 2060 and 16Gb ram.
Conclusion
- PS5 will run 99% of PS4 titles. Which is more than 4000 titles.
- PS5 will support Dualshock 4 for PS4 titles.
- PS5 won't run PS3 titles.
- PS5 won't run PS2 titles.
- PS5 won't run PS1 titles. No backward compatibility in these three PS.
