Litecoin was initially released in 2011. The second oldest cryptocurrency, after Bitcoin. It was founded by Charlie Lee. The hash algorithm used by Litecoin is Scrypt, which is a password-based key derivation function. It aims to process every block in 2.5 minutes.
Litecoin is not as popular as Bitcoin. The total supply of Litecoin is limited to 84 million. As of writing this, the market capitalization of Litecoin is roughly $13.62 billion. The current price of a single Litecoin is around $204.5.

Ethereum was founded in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin. Ethereum is basically The native cryptocurrency, also known as Ether (ETH) is the second most valuable cryptocurrency after Bitcoin (BTC).

Which is more profitable out of Litecoin or Ether?

If you had invested $100 in March 2017, you would have made around $4500 at the end of 2017.
For the short-term aim, you'll have to research Ether and find out possibilities of it whether it will go high or low in the coming period. Since Ether is an established cryptocurrency and the trend is going high, the long-term aim is much more safer and profitable.
